Today, as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded of the service Dr. King gave to his community, both here in the U.S. and later abroad. Dr. King understood the importance of the work one does for those around them, and the power of the individual to make a difference and change the world. We can only imagine when Dr. King began his work in the Civil Rights Movement, if he could fathom the extent to which he would change our world and the legacy he would leave behind. Dr. King reminded us, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”
In the latter years of Dr. King’s life, he was very vocal about the plight of those around the globe. While he continued his work for civil rights domestically, he also addressed oppression in the international community as he believed, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Outreach and the opportunity to connect with someone else is a powerful tool. It takes only one person to make a change, even small in the life of someone else. At O Street International, we believe in the power of outreach and its ability to drive change. By reaching out to others and connecting people, we reinforce the power of people to people exchanges and their ability to connect people with each other on a basic human level. We go beyond our country, our race, our nationality and connect to others through things like compassion, common interests, family, and community.
As you celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, be reminded of the importance of service. In the words of Dr. King, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”
